Atletico Madrid are determined to keep hold of their talisman, with manager Diego Simeone having repeatedly spoken highly of Julian Alvarez amid links with a return to the Premier League
Atletico Madrid are reportedly prepared to go to great lengths to convince Julian Alvarez to stay at the club amid interest from Barcelona and Arsenal. The 26‑year‑old's future has become a major talking point in recent weeks as the summer transfer window approaches.
While Barcelona have emerged as a possible destination for Alvarez should he depart Atletico, Arsenal and Chelsea are also believed to be long-term admirers of Alvarez and could be tempted to make a move.
The Gunners were in the market for a move for Alvarez before he joined Atletico in 2024.
However Atletico, who value the Argentine highly, are prepared to make him one of the highest earners at the club as an incentive for him to renew his contract, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Atletico are now understood to be ready to meet Alvarez's financial demands after initially hesitating, with a proposed salary of around €10 million (£8m) per year - an increase on the €7m (£6m) he currently earns.
The Colchoneros are reportedly confident he will commit his long‑term future to the club, a decision that would make it far harder for Barcelona or Arsenal to tempt him away.
Alvarez remains under contract until 2030 and has a €500m (£432m) release clause, significantly below the €100m Barca are believed to be willing to offer.
The report also notes that formal talks over a new deal have yet to begin, though Atletico remain optimistic that Alvarez and his family's positive adaptation in Madrid will be a decisive factor.

As for Arsenal, football.london understands their interest is genuine and they are well positioned should an opportunity arise but any move would require a substantial fee, meaning player sales will be crucial this summer if they intend to make a major push.
Atletico boss Diego Simeone, a long‑time admirer of the Argentine, has previously highlighted just how important the player is to his side. "A goal is always an incentive for strikers," he said.
"He's a very important player, recognised worldwide, wanted by lots of teams, but we have him and hopefully he can give us everything he’s got, because he’s a fantastic footballer."
Arsenal spent around £250m on seven new signings last summer and this time they're expected to keep costs down to ensure they remain compliant with the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
