PSG manager Luis Enrique has been adaptable with the No. 9 role, often using players who aren’t traditional strikers. Last season, Ousmane Dembélé stepped into that spot as PSG secured the treble, including the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy.
While Gonçalo Ramos is capable of playing as a central striker, the Portugal international often comes off the bench. This gives Enrique the flexibility to pursue a striker who better suits his preferred style in the future.
In 2024, Enrique and PSG reportedly eyed a forward to fill their No. 9 position. At the time, the Ligue 1 club had shown interest in Julián Álvarez, who eventually joined Atlético Madrid.
Will Julián Álvarez Be Leaving Next Summer?

Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona is focusing on Álvarez as their main choice for the striker role. Other players under consideration include Harry Kane, Serhou Guirassy, Victor Osimhen, and Etta Eyong.
Could the Ligue 1 club be planning a move for the player after missing out last year? According to the Chelsea Chronicle, Álvarez is considering a departure from Atlético Madrid, with Barcelona reportedly leading the chase. Chelsea and PSG are reportedly keeping a close eye on developments.

In a recent interview with France Football, the Argentine was asked about the possibility of joining PSG or Barcelona in the future.
“Do I plan to play for PSG or Barcelona in the coming years? Honestly, I don’t know,” Álvarez said. “I see what’s being said on social media… In Spain, there’s a lot of talk about me and Barcelona. When I signed with Atlético last year, there was also a lot of talk about Paris.
“It’s true, there were discussions between PSG officials and my agent—they showed interest in signing me—but it didn’t happen. For now, I’m focused on Atlético. We’ll take stock at the end of the season.”
Unless Atlético de Madrid decides to sell or the player requests a move, he is expected to remain with the club for the foreseeable future. Moreover, his contract runs through 2030, giving Atlético full control in any potential transfer negotiations involving the Argentine.
