BREAKING: Chelsea handed major Champions League qualification boost thanks to Arsenal

3 hours ago 13

The Premier League's fifth place in next season's Champions League has been confirmed by Arsenal's victory against Sporting CP. This is a huge boost for Chelsea, who are locked in a tense battle for the top five.

Liam Rosenior's side were knocked out of the competition comfortably by holders Paris Saint-Germain, meaning their only hope of getting into Europe's elite competition is through the Premier League.

The Blues are currently six-points behind fourth placed Aston Villa and face Manchester City on the weekend.

With seven matches left, finishing in the top four is a huge ask for the west Londoners. However, Rosenior's men are only one point behind fifth placed Liverpool going into this weekend's fixtures.

As a result of Mikel Arteta's side's result in Sporting, the Premier League will now receive a fifth spot in the Champions League. Arsenal needed a draw or a victory to ensure the Premier League topped the UEFA coefficient rankings.

Mathematically, no other nation in Europa can overtake the Premier League in the rankings. As a result, a fifth placed finish in the Premier League will be enough to qualify for next season's Champions League.

It was also a former Blue which ensured the Premier League got their fifth place in the competition. Havertz, who scored the winner when Chelsea won the Champions League in 2021, popped up in the 91st minute to snatch a 1-0 away victory for the Gunners.
