Lucas Bergvall has undergone ankle surgery after suffering a sprain against Borussia Dortmund earlier this week. Tottenham have offered an update following reports the young midfielder will be out for months.
Bergvall picked up the issue during the second half of Spurs' 2-0 Champions League win over 10-man Dortmund. News in Scandinavia had already claimed Bergvall is set to miss Sweden's World Cup play-off match against Ukraine in March.
Tottenham said: "We can confirm that Lucas Bergvall has today undergone surgery on his left ankle. The 19-year-old midfielder suffered a high ankle sprain during Tuesday's UEFA Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund. Lucas will now commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff."
Speaking in his press conference on Thursday, boss Thomas Frank had already suggested it was not looking positive for is player. The Dane said: "Unfortunately Lucas picked up an ankle injury.
"He keeps being very unlucky with injuries. It looks like a bigger one. He's been assessed in the next couple of days so we'll know more about the time frame."
Bergvall has struggled with a number of injuries this season. The Swede missed a number of matches due to a concussion in November and was forced off the field during the win at Crystal Palace in December.
The 17-year-old sensation Jun'ai Byfield made his senior first-team debut when replacing Bergvall in Europe earlier in the week, but he will see stiff competition in contention for Burnley.
Frank will be able to call upon Conor Gallagher once again after the former Chelsea player was ineligible to participate in Europe. The England international is available for the weekend and at a later stage of the Champions League.
