Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler makes bold claim after Liverpool game — 'This feeling'

6 hours ago 4

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler felt that his team may have deserved to win against Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday despite two goals from Hugo Ekitike being enough to secure the points for Arne Slot.

Following on from his brace at Leeds United last week, Ekitike scored another two goals one in each half — to earn the win for Liverpool. The Reds had to work hard to keep a clean sheet, but also had chances to further punish Brighton on the counter-attack.

"I think we definitely deserved more, maybe even a win," Hurzeler said. "We created so many chances. We had a bad start, reacted well and [had] a set piece against us that we didn't defend well.

"It's about consistency and doing it for 90 minutes, and that's where we lost it. There were several key moments and we had good chances to score goals.

"We have to take responsibility for that loss. The game was there to win but in the end we couldn't take it.

"The goals were definitely avoidable. It's about having a good start and defending set pieces, set pieces are getting so important, so we have to improve."

Hurzeler's side mustered slightly more in terms of expected goals than Liverpool did across the course of the game, and the teams were level for possession.

"Disappointed about the result, but a lot of positives to take away from the performance," he told Sky Sports.

"In the end, we have to get the consistency, get settled in the game and defend set pieces well, so it's a feeling of disappointment.

"Everyone wants to score in my team and there are certainly days when you create a lot of chances and maybe the goals are missing and today was one of those days.

"We're capable of competing with every team, that's why it's even more disappointing to have this feeling after the game.

"The big difference is we have to change the consistency in every action, do the small margins for 90 minutes, not 20 minutes, then stop and do it again."

Brighton is now ninth in the Premier League table, while Liverpool moved up to fifth, level on points with Crystal Palace. The Reds travel to Spurs next weekend; the Seagulls will host Sunderland.
