Bruno Fernandes was among a host of Manchester United players missing from training on Thursday ahead of Sunday’s game at Anfield.
Liverpool hosts Ruben Amorim’s side in its first game following the international break, with the Reds looking to end a run of three consecutive defeats, having fallen a point behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.
Arne Slot will be keeping his fingers crossed for some good news on the injury front before meeting United, with Ibrahima Konate a doubt after being sent home by France early with a quad injury, while Ryan Gravenberch raised concerns after being substituted at half-time of the Netherlands’ win over Finland with a hamstring issue.
The Reds will also be keeping a close eye on how their great rivals are shaping up. TV cameras were present at United’s training ground on Thursday, with four players notably absent.
Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo and Casemiro were all missing from the Red Devils’ main group session. According to the Daily Mail, Amorim has given the quartet extra time off following the international break, with the decision taken as a precaution rather than in response to any injury worries.
Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui though are expected to miss Sunday’s game, having also not been present during Thursday’s training session.
Martinez has been out since February after undergoing surgery on an ACL injury, and is not expected to return until after the November international break.
Mazraoui, meanwhile, has missed United’s last two games with a minor issue, and although he is said to be progressing well in his recovery, the Liverpool game is expected to come too soon for him.
United though has been boosted by Ayden Heaven taking part in training. Fears were raised over the former Arsenal defender after he was withdrawn at half-time of England U20s’ game against Switzerland last week, having picked up a knock in the opening minute.
Due to his side’s absences, Amorim called up United youngsters Shea Lacey, Jim Thwaites and Jack Fletcher for Thursday’s training session.

While Liverpool hasn’t found its rhythm yet this season, United’s boss remains under pressure after what has been a dismal period in charge.
Amorim’s side currently sits 10th in the table, having finished 15th last season, although United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has given his manager a vote of confidence.
“We’re results-driven at the end of the day, but we have to be patient and we have to see through the results," Ratcliffe told a new business podcast by The Times. "I think there’s lots of good things at Manchester United. We have to be patient and we have a long-term plan. It isn’t a light switch.
“Ruben needs to demonstrate that he’s a great coach over three years.”
