Manchester City can move back to the top of the Premier League — and could even confirm Burnley’s relegation — by taking maximum points at Turf Moor on Wednesday night. Pep Guardiola’s side cruised to a 5-1 win in the reverse fixture at the Etihad, with Erling Haaland scoring twice and Maxime Esteve netting two own goals.

City come into the game buoyed by Sunday’s statement 2-1 win over title rivals Arsenal, sealed by goals from Rayan Cherki and Haaland, which further boosted their grip on the run-in.

Their record at this stage of the season shows why they remain such formidable front-runners: City have not lost a league game in April since 2021, and they are chasing a return to the summit for the first time since August 21, 2025. They travel to Lancashire three points behind Arsenal but with a game in hand, and no side has collected more away points since the start of December than City (21), with the only blemish in that spell coming at Manchester United in January.

The head-to-head also points heavily in City’s favour. They have won 14 of their last 15 Premier League meetings with Burnley, outscoring them 45-6 since a 1-0 defeat at Turf Moor in March 2015, and they are unbeaten in 29 league matches against promoted sides since losing at Leeds in April 2021.

Burnley, by contrast, look headed for another drop. Once Europa League qualifiers under Sean Dyche, the Clarets now appear set for a familiar slide back into the Championship. Scott Parker’s side were hammered 4-1 at Nottingham Forest on Sunday after throwing away a half-time lead, and it marked their 45th defeat in their last 71 Premier League games across the last two seasons.

Relegation could be sealed this week: if West Ham avoid defeat against Crystal Palace on Monday and Burnley then lose to City, the Clarets would be more than 12 points from safety with only 12 still available.

Their recent form offers little encouragement, with just one win in their last 24 league matches and a 12-game winless run at home. Burnley have also lost their last 11 meetings with City, while Parker has been beaten in all five of his Premier League encounters with Guardiola’s side, by a combined score of 16-1.
