Cesc Fabregas speaks out on Chelsea job after Como chief gives green light

Cesc Fabregas has been linked with the Chelsea manager vacancy after the sacking of Liam Rosenior

Cesc Fabregas has insisted he "would be crazy" to pay any attention to speculation linking him with the vacant managerial position at Chelsea. The Spaniard, who represented the Blues between 2014 and 2019, has emerged as a potential candidate for the Stamford Bridge hotseat following Liam Rosenior's dismissal earlier this week.

Rosenior lasted just three months of his six-and-a-half year contract before being shown the door by Chelsea on Wednesday, following a disappointing run of results in the Premier League.

The club stated: "This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season."

Calum McFarlane has stepped in as caretaker and will take charge until the end of the campaign as the Blues push for European qualification and FA Cup glory.

Fabregas is amongst several names being touted for a permanent appointment in west London this summer, as Chelsea begin planning ahead.

However, the 38-year-old has made abundantly clear that his complete focus remains on Como for the remainder of the season.

Addressing his links to his former club during his pre-Genoa press conference earlier this week, Fabregas said: "Nothing to say about that.

"It'd be stupid to think about that now, my focus is on the next game against Genoa. I believe I will continue my chapter as Como head coach and focus on the next games.

"I would be crazy to think of anything else rather than these next five games and getting my team into Europe for the first time in history. I have not seen or heard any comments that my president said other than he told me he values me very highly."

However, Como president Mirwan Suwarso has since made clear that he will not stand in Fabregas' way at the end of the season, should the Spaniard opt to return to the club where he forged his legendary playing career.

Suwarso told City AM: "If that makes him happy, that's him. You want your employees to stay with you for as long as possible but at the end of the day we don't own him and he's free to go to Chelsea if he wishes."

Fabregas, who also represented Arsenal and Barcelona during his playing days, holds a minority stake in Como having initially joined the club in the twilight of his career in 2022. He stepped into management the following year as interim coach before being handed a permanent role shortly after.

In his first full campaign in charge, Fabregas guided Como to a 10th-place finish in Serie A, and the club are currently pushing to secure Champions League football for the 2026/27 season.

Chelsea, meanwhile, face a very real prospect of missing out on European competition altogether next season. At the time of writing, the Blues find themselves eighth in the Premier League table, 10 points behind the top five with just four matches remaining. However, their attention must first turn elsewhere before they can address that particular issue.

Chelsea are set to feature in the FA Cup this Sunday, facing Leeds United in the semi-finals at Wembley. Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm.
