The Champions League last-16 draw takes place today, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle all set to discover their opponents. Six Premier League sides have progressed to the knockout stage, and following this week's conclusion of the play-off round, they are about to learn their potential routes to the final.
Arsenal finished top of the league phase with an impeccable record of eight victories from eight fixtures and are the bookmakers' favourites to secure their maiden Champions League trophy. Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle are also in contention for some prestigious encounters, as European giants like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are amongst the 16 teams awaiting the draw.
Earlier this week, each English side that qualified for the last 16 knew they could be paired with one of four possible teams. Now, with the play-offs complete, that number has been reduced to two ahead of Friday's draw.
The earliest possible all-English fixture could see Newcastle take on Chelsea in the last 16. Other potential all-Premier League encounters, such as Manchester City vs Arsenal or Chelsea/Newcastle vs Tottenham/Liverpool, could only take place in the quarter-finals.
The Champions League last 16 draw is set to take place on Friday at 11:00 GMT, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham already through, and Newcastle joining them following a resounding 9-3 aggregate win over Qarabag in the play-offs. The eight victorious teams from the play-offs will join the top eight from the league phase in the draw, reports the Mirror.
Friday's draw will also establish each team's path through the tournament, outlining potential opponents for the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final. The first legs of the last-16 ties are slated for 10 or 11 March, with the second legs scheduled for 17 or 18 March.
The 2025-26 Champions League final is set to take place at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, on 30 May.
