Chelsea avoid nightmare scenario as Liam Rosenior discovers silver lining to Man City defeat

Moises Caicedo was treading on thin ice during Chelsea's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Moises Caicedo will be available for selection when Chelsea face Manchester United and Brighton later this month. The 24-year-old midfielder managed to escape a booking during the Blues' defeat to Manchester City, meaning he's avoided a Premier League ban.

Had Caicedo been cautioned at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, he would've been given a two-match suspension, ruling him out of clashes against the Red Devils and the Seagulls.

The FA's disciplinary rules stat that players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in matches up to and including their club's 32nd fixture of the English top-flight campaign will serve a two-game ban in the same competition.

As a result, the Ecuador international will be available for selection when Chelsea face Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, April 18, and Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday, April 21.

Yellow cards in the Premier League do not carry over to either of the domestic cup competitions, but when a player is shown a red card, they are carried over to and from the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Rosenior knows just how important Caicedo will be in the final weeks of the season, with Chelsea chasing qualification to the UEFA Champions League. Following Liverpool's win over Fulham at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, the Blues are now four points off a place in the top five.

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.

Sky broadcasts more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more with at least 215 live from the top flight alongside Formula 1, darts and golf.

Speaking to reporters at Cobham ahead of this weekend's clash, the Chelsea boss described Caicedo as one of the best players in the world. Rosenior said: "For me, Moises is one of the best defensive midfield players, if not the best defensive midfield player, in world football.

"That’s because of his intelligence, his physicality, his technical quality, and how he understands the game. He's going to be huge for us on Sunday."

Caicedo could reunite with Enzo Fernandez when Manchester United are in town. The Argentine, who had cast doubt over his future in west London during the international break, served the final game of his in-house two-match suspension on Sunday afternoon.

"Yeah, I've had a really good conversation myself, I had three or four with Enzo," said Rosenior ahead of the defeat to Manchester City. "He's apologised to me, he's apologised to the club, and we'll deal with that after a massive game on Sunday."

The Chelsea boss continued: "It's a serious meeting about something very serious. Enzo, I said from every single step along this way, I'm not questioning Enzo's character, I'm not questioning who he is as a person.

"I believe people make mistakes and you can't overstep the punishment for the mistake. I think we've made a sanction, we made a decision, I made a decision, and what I want for Enzo is for him to come on here and have an outstanding career."

Rosenior added: "There's still a few hurdles that need to be overcome that I won't go into, but at the same time I want every player really, really focused now on a huge run."
