Chelsea decision hands Mikel Arteta major boost as Arsenal face new contract decision

1 hour ago 3

Liam Rosenior's sacking at Chelsea has given something of a boost to Mikel Arteta as Arsenal must make a decision over his future soon

Liam Rosenior, sacked by Chelsea, stands as yet another example of the hiring and firing model adopted by so many major Premier League clubs failing to have the desired impact. Tottenham Hotspur are on their fourth head coach in the space of a year, as they themselves head toward a potential historic relegation to the Championship.

Arsenal are having a frustrating season at the other end of the table as Mikel Arteta again tries to win the Premier League but has recently undergone many slips. The title is finely poised for the final five games with both The Gunners and Manchester City tied on points and goal difference.

But Arsenal continue to fight, to challenge and to be the only English team remaining in the Champions League’s last four. Yet should they finish empty-handed, many within the fan base will likely call for the manager’s tenure to come to an end.

Some will argue this is unfair and that the Spaniard’s establishment of Arsenal back at this level has been done with plenty of mitigating factors existing. However, equally, there are many arguments of some consistent mistakes being made along the way.

Whether Arteta wins or not, and whether he stays or not, though, is irrelevant when it comes to looking across to West London. What has happened to Chelsea under BlueCo should stand as a marker for the likes of Arsenal that even when the time comes for Arteta to leave, they should never risk getting themselves into such a position.

Unai Emery was sacked after only one season at the club, following a breakdown in the relationship between him and his players, and a string of poor results, a European cup final defeat and failing to make the top four despite a record spend on players. When Arteta was appointed, it was not thought Arsenal would ever get into a state similar to Arsene Wenger, where a coach would both stay for a considerable length of time and gain significant influence at the club, almost autonomous at the club with only Josh Kroenke standing above him, despite other technically higher executives in the hierarchy. At least, that’s how it feels.

Arteta signed a three-year deal in 2024, compared to Liam Rosenior’s five-and-a-half-year contract. Chelsea have been something of an anomaly rather than a trailblazer when it comes to player and coach contracts.

No other club has looked at Chelsea and thought, ‘Yes, that seems to be the way to run a top-level football club.’ And by the way, the Blues are falling down the table, you can see why.

If anything, Rosenior’s sacking has handed a boost to Arteta and those who believe he is the right man for the job, regardless of what happens in a ‘Be careful what you wish for’ type way. Whether Arteta, though, is offered a new deal in the summer, however, remains to be seen.
