Chelsea learn ideal route to Champions League qualification as Liam Rosenior faces uphill task

1 hour ago 57

Liam Rosenior enjoyed a fantastic start to life at Stamford Bridge, but with Chelsea now in danger of failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, he's under pressure.

Chelsea cannot afford to drop any points during the end-of-season run-in if they want to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The Blues have fallen behind in the race for a place in Europe's top-flight competition, leaving little margin for error in the final weeks of the campaign.

Only Liverpool, in fifth, separates Chelsea from Aston Villa in fourth, yet there's a six-point gap between the two clubs. Fortunately, or not depending on whether Liam Rosenior can turn things around, three of the west Londoners' last seven games come against teams above them in the table.

Although that piles on the pressure, Chelsea have the chance to snatch points from rival opposition and make up some much-needed ground. In the event that the Club World Cup winners don't win as many points as they'd like, they look set to be thrown a safety net to break their fall.

So long as England remains in the top two of the UEFA Coefficient Table, which measures the performance of participating clubs from each European country across each of their competitions, the Premier League will be awarded a European Performance Spot.

If the English top-flight is granted an EPS, fifth place will earn qualification to the Champions League. As it stands, England leads the coefficient by quite some distance, although that could change by the end of the season, so the Blues can't put all their eggs in one basket.

So, with that being said, football.london has calculated how many points Chelsea will need to qualify for Europe's top-flight competition.

UEFA help Newcastle squeeze into Champions League

Last season, Newcastle United squeezed into the Champions League via fifth place in the Premier League. The Magpies benefitted from the coefficient rule, which was introduced at the start of the campaign when UEFA expanded its club competitions from 32 to 36 teams.

Arsenal reached the semi-finals of Europe's top-flight competition, Tottenham defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final, and Chelsea won the Conference League. Meanwhile in the Premier League, Chelsea finished fourth on 69 points and the Magpies finished fifth on 66.

Although the Blues finished the domestic season strongly on paper, the west Londoners essentially left it late, having to beat Nottingham Forest on the final day of the campaign.

5th: 66 points

Aston Villa ever so slightly fall below par

Unlike in 2024/25, the Premier League was not awarded a fifth spot in the Champions League in 2023/24. Aston Villa finished fourth with 68 points, with Tottenham and Chelsea coming fifth and sixth, with 66 and 63 points, respectively.

Ordinarily, the Blues would've qualified for the Europa League, but Manchester United, who finished eighth on 60 points, won the FA Cup. So, the Red Devils claimed that spot, relegating Chelsea into the Conference League.

Newcastle blow Liverpool out the water

In 2022/23, Newcastle blew Liverpool out of the water in the race for a place in the Champions League. The Magpies ended the Premier League campaign in fourth on 71 points, four adrift of the Merseyside outfit in fifth.

Chelsea were nowhere to be seen. In fact, the Blues didn't even finish in the top half of the table, ending the season in 12th on just 44 points. Nevertheless, Aston Villa would need to win at least five of their last seven games this term just to stand a chance of matching Newcastle's tally from a few years ago, which on current form looks unlikely!

Chelsea cannot afford to drop points

Ultimately, Chelsea cannot afford to drop any points during the end-of-season run-in if they want to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Based on the last three years, the Blues would need to finish the campaign on 69 points to claim fourth place.

In order to do so, Rosenior's side would need to win 21 points from their last seven games. For the brain boxes among you, on paper, that means Chelsea need to win EVERY remaining game of the season.

Of course, with matches against Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool on the horizon, the west Londoners can afford to perhaps drop a few points here and there, so long as other results across the table fall in their favour...
