Chelsea make early January transfer decision despite damning Jamie Carragher verdict

5 hours ago 2

Chelsea currently have no plans to sign a goalkeeper in the January transfer window, football.london understands, with the club more than happy with their options in that position.

Robert Sanchez has been the No.1 'keeper at Stamford Bridge in the early parts of this season and the Spaniard has continued his fine form from the end of the last campaign. While Sanchez still divides supporters, the goalkeeper has shown signs of consistency for a few months now.

Chelsea have full confidence in Sanchez, with the club believing the 27-year-old shot-stopper has shown his abilities in goal in recent months. In the summer transfer window, there was a big interest in AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, but at the moment, there are no plans to go back in for the France international.

The Blues were willing to offer Milan £13million for Maignan, whose contract is due to expire next summer, but the Italian club were demanding over £20million for the Frenchman. Chelsea then decided to walk away from negotiations, believing Milan were asking too much for someone who they could sign for free next summer.

Maignan will be available to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January but at the moment, Chelsea are not considering going back in for the goalkeeper.

Chelsea have high hopes for young shot-stopper Mike Penders, who is spending the season on loan at sister club Strasbourg. While the Blues have not made a decision re Penders and what will happen with the Belgian next summer, there is a feeling he might be ready to compete for the No.1 spot at Stamford Bridge.

Jamie Carragher, though, believes Chelsea need to upgrade on Sanchez, with the Liverpool legend speaking after the Spaniard was sent off in the defeat to Manchester United last month. "You can't come to Old Trafford with a goalkeeper and centre-backs like that, it won't allow you to win the championship," Carragher bluntly said on Sky Sports.

Carragher also said this on The Overlap back in August: "Chelsea started winning the leagues when they bought Petr Cech in… No matter what Chelsea have done or what they’ve spent, they can’t win the league because they haven’t got a goalkeeper to win the league."
