Chelsea make early transfer decision for teenage wonderkid

Chelsea academy midfielder Kiano Dyer is in talks with the club over extending his contract, football.london understands.

Dyer's current deal is due to expire next summer and the Blues are keen to tie the midfielder down to a new long-term contract. Talks over fresh terms have already started, with confidence an agreement will be struck.

The 18-year-old has been in and around Cobham since signing from West Bromwich Albion back in 2021. Dyer was quickly promoted to the Under-18s squad in 2022 and when impressive performances followed, he became a regular with the Under-21s.

Dyer first started to train with the first team squad during the 2023/24 season when Mauricio Pochettino was Chelsea head coach. It was Enzo Maresca, though, who handed the teenage midfielder his senior debut - bringing him on in the second-half away in Kazakhstan against Astana in the league phase of the Conference League.

There are high hopes for the England Under-19s international, who is comfortable playing in various positions across midfield. A loan move is an option for Dyer, with the midfielder keen on gaining more first team experience.

Maresca has shown there are pathways into the senior side at Chelsea for those coming through the ranks at Cobham. Tyrique George and Josh Acheampong both enjoyed breakthroughs into the first team last season, though with the talent the Blues have in the squad, competition for places is immense.

The Chelsea head coach also handed senior debuts to the likes of Sam Rak-Sakyi, Ato Ampah, Shim Mheuka, Harrison Murray-Campbell, Reggie Walsh and Genesis Antwi last season. Those in and around the academy will be hoping for something similar this term.
