Chelsea's first Champions League game in almost two-and-a-half years ended in disappointing fashion, as the Blues suffered a 3-1 defeat against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Looking to make a fast start at the Allianz Arena, Enzo Maresca's side began on the front foot but ended up falling behind in the 20th minute. Trevoh Chalobah put through his own net after failing to clear Michael Olise's low cross.
Seven minutes later, Bayern were gifted a golden chance to double their advantage. Vincent Kompany's men were awarded a penalty after Moises Caicedo was judged to have brought down Harry Kane inside the box.
Although referee Jose Maria Sanchez didn't initially point to the spot, he appeared to change his mind after guidance from the linesman and gave Bayern an opportunity to score a second from 12 yards.
Delivering his verdict on the incident, former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin said that the Blues paid the price following a "strange" incident that saw Caicedo foul Kane for the spot-kick.
Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live: "That is very strange. It looked like a penalty, but he didn't give it right away. He has let the play go on as if to wait for VAR and then he makes the call."
Kane, as he often did and has done for Tottenham, Bayern and England, converted from the spot, sending Robert Sanchez the wrong way and slotting into the bottom right corner.
However, Chelsea made a sharp response to going two behind as Cole Palmer pulled one back in the 29th minute. The England international finished off a fast counter-attack, playing a one-two with Malo Gusto before keeping calm and tucking the ball beyond Manuel Neuer and into the back of the net.
The Blues then started to gain some momentum but shot themselves in the foot by conceding a third midway through the second half. It was that man Kane again who haunted the Blues with a second of the night, pouncing on a mistake before sliding the ball around a marker and into the corner.
Delivering his assessment on Chelsea's performance as a whole, Maresca said post-match: "I think overall the performance was quite good. We started very well for 20 minutes, creating chances. When we conceded the goal, we can avoid that kind of goal. We were in the game and scored."
Meanwhile, Palmer outlined where it went wrong for the Blues in a tense post-match interview. The England international highlighted his side's lack of concentration and inability to manage the key moments well.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Palmer said: "Yeah [frustrating]. We deserved more. We started well, had early chances but when you make mistakes at the highest level it's difficult.
"There was a lack of concentration, not managing the moments correct.
"We showed we can play against one of the best teams in the competition. We deserved more to be honest. The manager said to us before we can go toe-to-toe.
"It's a good learning curve and to be back in the competition is nice."I don't even know [what happened in the second half]. We're not coming here to be a learning curve. We showed we want to compete."
