Chelsea player ratings vs Man Utd - Sanchez horror show, defensive chaos and Joao Pedro struggles

2 hours ago 3

Chelsea have been beaten for the first time in the Premier League season with Manchester United taking advantage of a lacklustre display from the visitors in the north west.

Enzo Maresca made two changes to the Blues side that were beaten away at Bayern Munich in midweek, with Wesley Fofana and Estevao Willian replacing Tosin Adarabioyo and Malo Gusto. However, just five minutes in, Maresca's plan effectively went out of the window with Robert Sanchez being shown a straight red card for taking out Bryan Mbeumo, who had rounded the goalkeeper.

Moments later, United took a deserved lead. Patrick Dorgu's header was met on the volley by Bruno Fernandes to inflict even more misery on Chelsea and Maresca, who made three substitutes in the opening 20 minutes. An utterly bizarre beginning to a game at Old Trafford.

United's dominance continued and it was soon 2-0 to the hosts. Some sloppy defending allowed Luke Shaw to beat everyone in the air and flick it onto Casemiro, whose header beat Filip Jorgensen.

Chelsea were handed a boost just before half-time when Casemiro pulled Andrey Santos down and received his second yellow card. The second-half was contested with 10 men on either side as the rain continued to pour, the conditions got worse and Chelsea still failed to threaten the United goal.

Though, with just over 10 minutes of normal time to go, Trevoh Chalobah headed past a rooted Altay Bayindir to give Chelsea a fighting chance. It proved a mere consolation for the visitors, however, with United holding on for all three points.

Below, Bobby Vincent rates the Blues players based on their performance in Manchester.

Robert Sanchez - 2

A two is generous, to be honest. Red carded after five minutes. He can have no complaints with the decision either.

Reece James - 6

A crucial challenge to prevent Patrick Dorgu getting a shot away on three minutes. However, the captain made a mistake for the second goal with a really sloppy clearance that caused havoc in the Chelsea box. Fine cross for Chalobah's goal, though.

Wesley Fofana - 5

Great to see him back in the side. He was the best of the Chelsea centre-backs, but that was such a low bar.

Trevoh Chalobah - 5

A tough evening. Nowhere near his best. Not dominant enough in duels. Sloppy in possession. Scored a good header to get Chelsea back into the game and that helped with his overall rating.

Marc Cucurella - 5

Showed heart at least. Wasn't the worst of the defenders by any means but an off-day for the Spaniard.

Moises Caicedo - 5

Not his usual self. Too sloppy in possession but that was not all down to him. There was not much movement around the Ecuadorian.

Enzo Fernandez - 5

Below-par. Seemed wound up on the pitch - and he played like it, but not in a positive way.

Pedro Neto - N/A

Sacrificed following the red card as Maresca changed the shape.

Cole Palmer - N/A

Palmer is taken off on 20 minutes and headed straight down the tunnel. We await to hear from Maresca on that one. He didn't look happy.

Estevao Willian - N/A

Was excited to see him play but he was subbed off after six minutes following the red card.

Joao Pedro - 4

Quiet. You can't really blame him as Chelsea barely threatened. Either way, he looks knackered.

Filip Jorgensen (on for Estevao 6') - 5

Thrown right into the deep end early on and makes a dominant punch immediately after coming on to help settle any nerves he may have had.

Tosin Adarabioyo (on for Neto 6') - 3

Struggled to get up to the pace of the game after coming on so early.

Andrey Santos (on for Palmer 20') - 6

He would not have been expecting to get on as early as he did. Baited Casemiro for the red card. Some nice link-up play. Bright.

Malo Gusto (on for Fofana 64') - 6

Played at left-back. Passed it well without making much of an impact.

Tyrique George (on for Cucurella 64') - 6

Interesting he was trusted for this one ahead of Alejandro Garnacho. Not able to have the desired impact for the Blues.
