Chelsea ready to challenge Tottenham for exciting centre-back with £88m release clause

Tottenham Hotspur have competition to deal with from bitter London rivals Chelsea in the race for a young South American starlet.

It has been reported that Tottenham want to add another centre-back to their squad in January. This is despite the fact that Radu Dragusin is now edging closer to returning to the pitch.

One of the defenders thought to be on the Lilywhites’ radar is a young Argentine starlet who has emerged as a star performer for River Plate.

Several outlets have claimed over recent weeks that Spurs have expressed an interest in Lautaro Rivero, who is expected to soon make the step up to Europe after shining in the Primera Division.

Chelsea ready to challenge Tottenham for Lautaro Rivero

A new report in River Noticias has now claimed that Chelsea have joined Thomas Frank’s side in the race for Rivero.

The report says that the Blues are looking to bolster their options at centre-back and that they have now added the 22-year-old to their wishlist.

The Club World Cup winners are said to be monitoring Rivero closely ahead of the January transfer window, but the outlet says that River Plate are determined to hold on to their young starlet beyond January.

Spurs also face competition from a La Liga side for Rivero

This report comes just a few days after La Razon claimed that Atletico Madrid are ready to battle Tottenham for Rivero’s services.

That update revealed that the La Liga side are fearful of being financially outmuscled by Spurs in the race for the centre-back.

The report added that although Rivero has a release clause of €100m (£87.7m) in his contract, Diego Simeone’s side were hopeful of landing the youngster for around €50m (£43.8m).
