Chelsea's summer transfer plans after £277m flurry as Man Utd and Liverpool target eyed

1 hour ago 3

Chelsea are expected to strengthen every outfield department in the summer transfer window with the west London club looking to provide Liam Rosenior with the tools to compete.

Rosenior has made an impressive start to life at Stamford Bridge - winning eight of his opening 11 matches in charge following his appointment to replace Enzo Maresca last month. The Blues head coach is delighted with the squad he has inherited and makes no secret about that when speaking to the press but between now and the end of the season, Rosenior will be in continuous dialogue with the club's sporting directors over areas that can be improved, despite over £277million of talent coming in last summer.

Chelsea are keen to bolster their defence in the summer and looked to accelerate their plans last month but missed out on Liverpool-bound Jeremy Jacquet. Instead the Blues recalled Mamadou Sarr from his loan with Strasbourg, with the Senegal international impressing in his first start against Hull City last week.

The likes of Jacobo Ramon from Como and the - seemingly - soon-to-be free agent Marcos Senesi are alternatives to Jacquet for Chelsea. The Blues have enough depth in their centre-back pool, though the club are looking to improve the quality of options with the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile failing to impress when called upon this season.

Chelsea need to address their central midfield problem as well. In terms of the first-team options at Rosenior's disposal, there are not many better in the Premier League than Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos.

But Romeo Lavia's ongoing injury nightmare has meant the likes of Caicedo and Fernandez, especially, have played more minutes than Chelsea would have initially envisaged. It might sound brutal but Lavia has showed time after time that he cannot be trusted to stay fit. The Blues are looking to find a long-term solution for Lavia and solve his injury crisis once and for all.

Adam Wharton is a long-term target of Chelsea's and there seems to be a general acceptance that the Crystal Palace midfielder will depart Selhurst Park at the end of the season. It will not be a straight run at Wharton for Chelsea, though, with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United also understood to be keen.

Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest is another option for the Blues, but him or Wharton would surely cost something close to £100million in the summer. It would be wiser for Chelsea to look for a midfielder who would cost less but has the potential to reach the level of Caicedo or Fernandez.

There is Dario Essugo, of course, who Chelsea believe has a similar skillset to Caicedo. The Portugal Under-21 international's debut season at Stamford Bridge has been plagued with injuries, however, meaning Chelsea have not been able to call upon his talents at all.

In attack, Chelsea have an abundance of options at the moment. Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho are Rosenior's options for the wings, while Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu are the players being used in the No.9 role. But Chelsea are expected to change a few things around.

One would think for Chelsea to bring an attacking player or two in over the summer window, then the Blues would need to move someone on. Who would leave, though, is still unclear. Either way, Rosenior will be hoping to add that little bit of stardust in every department to help bring his Chelsea squad to that next level.
