Chelsea's transfer deadline day plans revealed as deal agreed but Liverpool blow laid bare

1 day ago 31

It is transfer deadline day and Chelsea are working on numerous deals before the window closes at 7pm this evening

The January transfer window closes at 7pm - UK time - this evening and for Chelsea, there is plenty of work going on behind the scenes in order to complete a few deals before the deadline.

The Blues are still considering what to do at centre-back in this window. There is interest in bringing a new starting-level central defender to Stamford Bridge, but that is nothing new. Interest can be dated back to the summer transfer window - even before Levi Colwill's anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Back then, Dean Huijsen was the main target for the west Londoners but the Spain international ended up making a £50million move to Real Madrid. Chelsea scoured the market after Huijsen's decision but chose not to move for a central defender because they didn't believe there was anyone out there - and, crucially, available - to come in and improve Enzo Maresca's side at the time.

For the last couple of weeks, though, Chelsea have been locked in talks with Rennes over a deal to sign the much sought after Jeremy Jacquet. Rennes, however, do not want to lose Jacquet midway through their season and would be more open to doing business over a summer move.

Liverpool recently entered the race to sign the 20-year-old defender and it emerged late on Sunday evening that the Reds had agreed a deal with Rennes for Jacquet to move to Anfield in the summer transfer window. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will act, with the likes of Jacobo Ramon and Marcos Senesi also identified as targets.

Aaron Anselmino is set to join Strasbourg on loan until the end of the season, football.london understands, having been recalled from his spell at Borussia Dortmund last weekend. Chelsea are understood to be disappointed with Dortmund at how they perceived the Black and Yellow to have been looking at signing Anselmino on a permanent basis.

Sources have stated Dortmund were pursuing the permanent signing of the Argentine on a pre-agreement. Though sources in Germany have denied such claims. Either way, Chelsea are now set to send Anselmino to Strasbourg until the end of the season and that could well have a domino effect today.

The Blues are continuing talks over possibly recalling Mamadou Sarr from his loan with their sister club Strasbourg. The 20-year-old Senegal international has been a key fixture in the French club's side this season, and under Liam Rosenior when he was in charge at Stade de la Meinau.

Tyrique George is set to join Everton on loan until the end of the season after the two clubs struck an agreement on Sunday evening. The 19-year-old winger will initially move on loan to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but the Toffees will have the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the campaign, football.london understands.

Axel Disasi, who has not played for Chelsea's senior side in more than 12 months, could depart today also. AC Milan are interested in signing the experienced French defender, as are West Ham United.

The Hammers have held talks with Chelsea and Disasi's representatives over a move to the London Stadium, but would prefer a loan deal. The Blues, however, want to sell Disasi. Further updates and developments are expected throughout transfer deadline day.
