Chelsea star gives honest Enzo Maresca decision verdict - 'something was missing'

Andrey Santos has praised Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca after scoring his first goal for the Blues in their 4-3 Carabao Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers

Andrey Santos has opened up on his admiration for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca after netting his first goal for the club in their dramatic Carabao Cup win over Wolves. Despite joining the Blues almost three years ago, the 21-year-old only made his senior debut this summer at the Club World Cup.

Now back at Stamford Bridge following an impressive loan spell with Strasbourg, Santos is beginning to carve out a place in Maresca’s plans. The midfielder’s hard work was rewarded earlier this week when he scored in Chelsea’s thrilling 4-3 victory against Wolves. Following the result, Santos had nothing but kind words for his manager.

He told Globo Esporte: “The first goal is always very special. I’d been trying for some time, but something was always missing. Maresca gives me freedom to arrive in attack as a surprise element, like I did at Strasbourg. This time, it worked, and I’m happy to help the team.”

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, saving members £336 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games this season, an increase of up to 100 more.

Santos continued: “I work hard every day to evolve, to understand the game better and to improve my weaknesses. It’s been a special start to the season. I hope to grow and continue this process.”

Speaking about Chelsea’s league start, the Brazilian added: “We all know how difficult the Premier League is. This season is no different. Everything is very balanced. We have to move step by step.

“Our squad has great players, and that’s essential for a long season with so many competitions. Competing with these players every day makes me better. Our daily work is high-level, and we try to bring that into the matches.”

Santos joined Chelsea from Vasco da Gama in 2023 for a reported £13million and has spent much of his time out on loan. His first move saw him return to Vasco, before an early recall from Nottingham Forest the season after, following just two appearances in five months.

It was at Strasbourg where he truly found form, scoring 11 goals and registering four assists in 34 Ligue 1 appearances. Now back in west London, Santos looks ready to establish himself as a regular under Maresca, and his first Chelsea goal may be just the start.
