Geovany Quenda is a matter of weeks away from returning to training following a metatarsal injury that has kept the soon-to-be Chelsea winger out of action for the past couple of months.

The 18-year-old Sporting CP star, who will join the Blues in the summer after a £40million agreement was struck last year, has not featured for the Portuguese club since their derby match against Benfica on December 5. Quenda has been using Chelsea's training facilities in Cobham over the past month or so to undergo rehabilitation from the foot problem.

The Portugal Under-21 international underwent surgery on a fifth metatarsal fracture not too long after the injury but is now close to returning to the pitch for Sporting. football.london understands over the next fortnight, Quenda is expected to begin on-field work and running again ahead of returning to first-team action in Portugal.

His return to action will only happen after Chelsea's medical department, in coordination with Sporting's, gives the go-ahead. However, neither club are in too much of a hurry when it comes to Quenda returning as they look to ensure the teenage winger makes a full recovery.

Quenda himself is excited to return, with the Portuguese wonderkid aiming to leave the José Alvalade Stadium on a high note. Sporting are four points behind Liga Portugal leaders Porto, with Quenda hoping he can bow out as a champion.

He remains in the UK for the time being and has been using his time out to take English lessons and sort out some logistical matters in preparation for next season. Dario Essugo, his former Sporting teammate, has been in consistent dialogue with Quenda over the last month or so to help him settle in a new country.

Quenda, who is set to be part of the first-team picture next season, has also spoken with Liam Rosenior. In a brief conversation, Quenda got to know his future head coach, who took over following Enzo Maresca's departure last month.
