Chelsea star suffers another devastating injury blow with transfer priority becoming clearer

Aaron Anselmino is on loan with Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg until the end of the season but there looks to be some bad news on the injury front for the defender

It has been nothing short of a disastrous season for Aaron Anselmino. The on-loan Chelsea centre-back spent the first half of the season with Borussia Dortmund, where he made a total of 10 appearances in all competitions.

That number would have been considerably higher if he hadn't suffered a couple of different muscular injuries. Anselmino was recalled by Chelsea in January and moved to sister club Strasbourg instead, but he has played just 15 minutes across three matches for the BlueCo-owned French club to date.

Now, a report from French news outlet L'Equipe claims that the 20-year-old's season could be over. Anselmino has another hamstring injury, which is a worry in the long term for the defender and the Blues given how much football he has missed this season already.

The Argentine defender, who is contracted at Stamford Bridge until 2031, is set to return to Chelsea in the summer before the club make a decision on his future. Another loan looks likely, perhaps to Strasbourg again, as the Blues look to get him regular minutes on the pitch.

Either way, Anselmino will be desperate for a more successful season than the current one given the constant disruptions. There are said to be high hopes for the Argentine defender but the club feel he needs first-team minutes to aid his development, something they have been unable to offer him up until this point.

Chelsea are prioritising signing a starting-level centre-back in the upcoming summer transfer window, football.london understands. The Blues tried to sign Jeremy Jacquet in January from Rennes, but the French defender decided to move to Liverpool at the end of the season instead.

Levi Colwill remains central to Chelsea's plans and the club are looking for a long-term partner to play alongside the England international. Colwill is back in full training and is expected to return at some point before the end of the season after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury back in August.
