Liam Rosenior spoke in Friday afternoon's pre-Wrexham press conference about the importance of this season's FA Cup for Chelsea. Yet his team selection on Saturday evening somewhat went against his words.

Rosenior made nine changes from the XI that beat Aston Villa on Wednesday night. Given the tight turnaround and the fact Chelsea travel to Paris Saint-Germain next Wednesday, it was not too much of a surprise but the team played like a heavily-rotated side.

The first-half performance in Wrexham was arguably the worst 45 minutes of football we have seen from a Chelsea side since Rosenior took over two months ago. It was so bad that Romeo Lavia and Pedro Neto were arguing with one another while walking across the pitch to get to the tunnel. The two clearly disagreed on something. Given the performance level from Chelsea, there were likely even more disagreements when the players entered the dressing room at the half-time break.

There were improvements in the second period but it was still far from perfect. Somehow, Chelsea got out of Wrexham with the win - and that is to their credit.

It is now 10 wins from 15 games in all competitions for Rosenior - something the Chelsea head coach stressed a couple of times during his post-match press conference at the Racecourse Ground. It's a strong record, and his only three defeats as Blues boss have come against Premier League leaders Arsenal.

There is still, however, so much room for improvement. Chelsea's inability to take control of the FA Cup tie when Wrexham midfielder George Dobson was sent off in stoppage time (extra-time was then played) is a bit of a concern for Rosenior.

"It was the same against Crystal Palace about six weeks ago when I first joined," explained Rosenior. "We played really well when 3-0 up. We have control, and we need to find a way to get the game managed better.

"But in these cup ties, when there's emotion, you can feel the emotion of the game. They're very difficult games to play in.

"We won't be the only team in the Premier League in this round to find it difficult against lower-level opposition. We need to find a way.

"But also, what's that? I think 15 games, 10 wins now. It's not a bad place to be. So we just need to keep working. We need to recover. We've got a big game on Wednesday, we need to start preparing for that."

Alejandro Garnacho played a big role in Chelsea progressing into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. The Argentine winger, who made his second consecutive start after impressing against Aston Villa on Wednesday evening, forced an own goal to open the scoring for the Blues after his shot was cleared off the line, only for it to rebound off Arthur Okonkwo's back and into the Wrexham net.

Garnacho looked lively throughout his 120 minutes on the pitch in north Wales, often looking the most likely to produce something in the final third - and so that proved in extra-time. A clinical volley from the Argentine gave the west Londoners the lead for the first time in the tie and they held on from there.

Rosenior is delighted with the 21-year-old and the form he finds himself in now: "I feel he's in a good place. Ale is in a great place.

"His goals, his energy levels for 120 minutes were magnificent, considering he played a full 90 on Wednesday. He's in a really good place, and it's really, really good to see his form at this really important stage of the season."

Garnacho's 210 minutes (plus stoppage time) in the last two games, while impressive, perhaps means he won't start in Paris next week. Equally, Saturday to Wednesday is not too bad of a turnaround for the Blues.

For Chelsea, it's a potentially season-defining match. A run in the Champions League would lift spirits at Stamford Bridge and perhaps turn those Rosenior doubters.

The tie will not be over if Chelsea lose, as long as it's nothing more than two goals, for example. The performance at Wrexham will not have filled Blues supporters with confidence when going away to the Champions League holders, but we have seen already this season, this Chelsea squad tend to save their best for this caliber of opposition.
