Chelsea midfielder Mathis Amougou has signed for Strasbourg in a permanent deal.
The 19-year-old joined the Blues for a reported £12.9 million from Saint-Etienne in February. He made two first-team appearances for Enzo Maresca's side during the second half of the season, coming off the bench against Southampton in the Premier League and Legia Warsaw in the Conference League.
In total, Amougou played 22 minutes of senior football for Chelsea. He was named in the matchday squad on nine other occasions, including in the Conference League final, but never made it on the pitch.
But now, just five months after moving to Stamford Bridge, the Frenchman has secured a transfer back to Ligue 1 and signed a five-year contract at Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg.
A statement from Strasbourg read: "Mathis Amougou at Racing. The midfielder has signed with Racing until 2030. A great prospect from the AS Saint-Etienne youth system, Mathis Amougou played 17 Ligue 1 matches before joining Chelsea last winter.
"The central midfielder has 34 caps for various French youth teams, from U16 to U20, including appearances in the finals of the 2023 U17 World Cup and the 2024 U19 European Championship. The player, born in 2006, is now tied to the club until 2030."
He is expected to fill the void left by Andrey Santos, who has returned to Chelsea following a productive loan spell, and Habib Diarra after his £30m summer move to Premier League newcomers Sunderland.
Chelsea are said to have placed a buyback clause in their agreement with Strasbourg, with his development expected to be watched closely by a club who are not afraid to test their talent in the French top tier.
Amougou is the latest Chelsea player to make the switch to Strasbourg.
