Chelsea transfer guru Marina Granovskaia's life now four years after Stamford Bridge exit

Former Chelsea chief executive and transfer guru Marina Granovskaia became the architect of the club's modern success - but what has she been up to since leaving Stamford Bridge?

Marina Granovskaia was the undisputed 'Iron Lady' of Stamford Bridge. For nearly a decade, she served as the gatekeeper of Roman Abramovich's billions, a formidable negotiator who earned the title of the most powerful woman in football.

Arriving in London in 2003 as part of Abramovich's close-knit network of trusted associates, Granovskaia began quietly rising the ranks. She became involved in transfers and contractual dealings in 2010, joined the club's board three years later, and was appointed Chelsea's chief executive in 2014.

Under her watchful eye, the Blues secured eight major trophies, including two Premier League crowns and the Champions League in 2021. Granovskaia also personally brokered the club's record-breaking £900million Nike sponsorship deal, showcasing her formidable negotiating power and commercial acumen.

But it was her transfer acumen that was truly the stuff of legend. She was the mastermind behind the clinical captures of N'Golo Kante, Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Silva, and played a key role in luring Eden Hazard to the club in 2012.

Granovskaia also squeezed a £100million fee out of Real Madrid when Hazard moved on in 2019, despite the Belgian having just one year remaining on his Blues contract at the time, one of several high-profile exits that helped transform Chelsea into one of football's most accomplished selling machines.

However, the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine changed everything. Following the sanctions on Abramovich and the subsequent takeover by the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium (now BlueCo), the Russian-Canadian executive who had spent 20 years by Abramovich's side was suddenly out.

She left in June 2022 with a reported £35m bonus and a legacy that many fans now view with deep nostalgia as the club navigates its turbulent new era.

Breaking the silence

For almost two years after her exit, Granovskaia was a ghost. While other former Chelsea figures like Petr Cech, who continued his ice hockey career, took on new challenges, Marina remained strictly private. That changed in early 2024 when she surprised the football world by kickstarting her Instagram account, which had laid dormant since she opened it in 2017.

Far from the intimidating persona often portrayed in the media, her social media presence is remarkably warm. She quickly broke her silence to thank Chelsea fans, admitting she was "overwhelmed" by the thousands of "blue hearts" and messages of support she received.

"I wasn't really sure about the Instagram thing, but I have been totally overwhelmed by the amount of messages, DMs, blue hearts, good memories that have been coming my way," she said in a video uploaded to her page. "I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone. I did not expect that, so I'm really really grateful."

The 51-year-old has also filled her page with holiday snaps and photos of her son, who turns 11 this month. "You are the centre of my universe and the greatest joy I have ever known," she wrote of her boy. "I'm so grateful that I get to spend more time with you now (even if you probably wish I was back living at Stamford bridge!)."

Back at the Bridge

Despite stepping down from the club's board four years ago, Granovskaia has refused to stay away from Stamford Bridge. She was spotted in the ground last year, though notably among the crowd rather than in the director's box.

She shared photos of herself in the concourse and in the stands during Chelsea's win over Newcastle in October 2024. "First time in with the supporters at Stamford Bridge and, no, I was not tall enough to see the goals," she quipped, before adding: "Wonderful to be back."

She also attended the Gianluca Vialli memorial game and the Game4Ukraine charity match, reportedly buying her own general admission tickets rather than asking for VIP treatment.

Abramovich bond

Despite the seismic shift in Chelsea's ownership, Marina's loyalty remains unchanged. In late 2024, she posted a heartfelt birthday tribute to Roman Abramovich, acknowledging that he had been a "big part of my life" for 25 years.

"Considering how many messages sent to this page refer to Roman, I thought it would be right to wish him a very happy birthday on here... Roman was a big part of my life from 1997 until 2022 and I know he touched the lives of many of you, so I have a feeling there will be many congratulatory messages under here... Happy Birthday Roman!"

What's next?

Granovskaia still lives in her £5m home in Fulham - just a stone's throw from Stamford Bridge. Since her Chelsea departure, she has been linked with several other European football clubs, including Spartak Moscow, but nothing has yet tempted her back into football.

Last month, however, she revealed that a number of footballing "proposals" had been put to her, though she hinted that none had progressed any further.

For now, the woman who once orchestrated some of the game's most frantic transfer windows appears content with a quieter life of gym sessions, skiing trips and watching her beloved Blues from afar. For Chelsea, meanwhile, she remains the great 'what if' after four years of hit-and-miss recruitment under BlueCo.
