Chris Sutton has slammed Liverpool fans, insisting it “makes no sense” why some may have “had enough” of Arne Slot.

The Liverpool boss has been under pressure for his job for some time now amid what has been a poor defense of the Premier League title. The Reds are struggling just to qualify for next season’s Champions League, with Slot having also come in for criticism for his side’s performances.

The Dutchman isn’t helped either by the availability of Xabi Alonso following his firing at Real Madrid, with the former midfielder still a firm favorite at Anfield - although reports suggest Manchester City could be eyeing him up first.

Slot doesn’t look to be under pressure internally, with Liverpool having put on a united front with their head coach, sporting director Richard Hughes and CEO Billy Hogan recently.

Some pundits have cranked up the heat though, with former Manchester United star Paul Scholes having suggested Slot needs to win the Champions League in order to save his job.

“If you lose three or four games on the trot, you’re under pressure,” Scholes said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

“Of course you are at a club like Liverpool. The one thing he’s probably got to do now is win the Champions League.

“That might be the only thing that saves his job. I can’t see him doing it though. I can’t see him doing it.”

Ex-Blackburn and Chelsea forward Sutton though sees things differently, and is bemused by how Slot could be under pressure from supporters.

“The Liverpool fans seem to have had enough of Arne Slot, which again makes no sense to me,” Sutton told BBC Sport. “Just because they aren't going to win the title again doesn't mean they aren't building anything.

“It seems that making the Champions League places is like the title used to be now - as in, if you don't make the Champions League then the manager has got to go. It drives me potty.”

Liverpool.com says: You’ve pretty much got the two extremes of the argument right there. The truth about Slot’s position is probably somewhere in between.

Given Liverpool won the title last season, and spent so much money in the summer transfer window, it’s only natural for Slot to be under pressure, and even more so if he fails to secure a place in the Champions League for next season.

He obviously still has some credit in the bank after last year, so his future would likely rely more on securing that Champions League spot rather than winning this season’s competition, but there is a lot of work that needs to be done.
