Cody Gakpo can only laugh after Curtis Jones gatecrashes Liverpool interview

2 days ago 15

Liverpool's own Curtis Jones couldn't resist a cheeky interruption during Cody Gakpo's interview, playfully contesting Gakpo's assertion that newcomer Jeremie Frimpong was the quickest in the squad.

Gakpo was chatting with LFCTV amidst the team's preseason tour in Asia, as the Reds touched down in Hong Kong for an upcoming clash with AC Milan this weekend. Liverpool's roster is brimming with new talent alongside Frimpong, including Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and the imminent signing of Hugo Ekitike.

Dutch sensation Gakpo was sharing his thoughts on compatriot Frimpong, lauding his offensive prowess post-transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, while also highlighting his remarkable speed down the flanks.

"[He will bring] a lot. I think he has a lot of quality," Gakpo said of Frimpong. "But I think one of his biggest qualities is he is maybe already the fastest player on the team.

"He is very fast, he has a good cross, he can defend, he can attack," he added. "I think he can help us a lot."

It was at this juncture that Jones jumped into the fray, lavishing compliments on his colleague, asserting that he himself held the title of the fleetest on the team, not Frimpong.

"He's an incredible player," Jones quipped as he joined the frame. "Probably the fastest in the team, one of the strongest, got the best technique, yeah, yeah, yeah, Cody Gakpo."

Gakpo couldn't help but chuckle when Jones cut in, responding with a bemused: "Oh my god! Thanks Curt, thanks Curt!"

The 26-year-old made the switch to Liverpool from PSV in 2023 and has truly left his mark at Anfield. With 41 goals in 128 matches, he's been a formidable force for the Reds, contributing significantly to their Premier League triumph last season.

He netted 10 times in the league and added 18 goals across all competitions, cementing his status as Slot's preferred choice on the left flank.

Jones, on the other hand, is a product of Liverpool's youth system who has racked up 179 appearances since his first-team debut in the 2019-20 season.

Last season saw him make 46 appearances in all competitions under Slot.

Meanwhile, Liverpool is on the cusp of officially announcing Ekitike as its newest acquisition.

The reigning Premier League champions have agreed to a deal for the Eintracht Frankfurt forward, whom Slot is counting on to ramp up the competition for players like Luis Diaz in the attacking line-up.
