Cole Palmer has made just four appearances for Chelsea in all competitions this season but the England international is said to be nearing his return from injury
Ben Foster believes Cole Palmer has got to play more regularly for England at next year's World Cup after the Chelsea star was used sparingly at Euro 2024 for the Three Lions.
England, then managed by Gareth Southgate, reached the final of last year's Euros where they were beaten by Spain in Berlin. Palmer was the Three Lions' scorer on the night, but that was after coming on as a substitute in the second-half. In fact, Palmer did not start once throughout the tournament - making five appearances from the bench.
This time around, Palmer will be hoping for a more significant role in the England squad under Thomas Tuchel. Foster has called on Tuchel to use Chelsea's No.10 more than his predecessor to help the Three Lions win their first World Cup since 1966.
On his own Fozcast, Foster said: "But we can't do another World Cup like we did the last Euros, where Palmer was coming on for the last like 10 minutes and we're playing Phil Foden all over the place and nobody really knows what's going on."
There is no guarantee, though, at this point, that Palmer will even make the England squad. The 23-year-old has made just four appearances this season for Chelsea due to a persistent groin injury, with his campaign yet to really get going.
Injuries for Palmer have restricted to him to just one appearance since Tuchel took charge at the start of the year. There is such an array of attackers who play in a similar position to Palmer, so the England boss has a big decision on his hands ahead of next summer.
Former Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew shares a similar opinion to Foster and believes Palmer, if he can find some form once he is back fit, will make it a really tough decision for Tuchel in relation to who he starts in his attacking line. Speaking on talkSPORT, Pardew said: "One thing that could impact that, even before we get to March, is Palmer. If he comes back fit and well and looking great, and then that's a really tough decision."
