Cristian Romero contract update after Tottenham captain holds positive talks with Thomas Frank

Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham is once again in the spotlight, with reports indicating that discussions with Thomas Frank have taken place regarding a new long-term contract.

Tottenham Hotspur will feel relieved that they have managed to keep hold of their defensive leader, Cristian Romero, up until now in the summer transfer window, especially with Atletico Madrid circling for his signature.

The Spanish side has since moved on to other targets, leaving Tottenham to take decisive action of their own by handing Romero the captain’s armband for the 2025/26 season.

It has been a bright start for the Argentine in his new role, as he marshalled the backline superbly in the Premier League opener, guiding his team to a commanding 3-0 victory over newly promoted Burnley, where his composure and authority stood out.

Tottenham and Thomas Frank hold talks with Cristian Romero

Tottenham are continuing to monitor possible signings for the squad, but securing their top players on new deals is just as high on the agenda.

Fresh report from TBR Football now states that new Spurs manager Thomas Frank has already held discussions with Cristian Romero about his long-term future in north London.

It is understood that Tottenham are determined to tie Romero down to fresh terms after appointing him captain, and talks have been described as positive so far.

The Argentine is said to have been impressed with Frank’s early approach, with Tottenham now prepared to make him the highest-paid player in the squad should he commit his future.

Speaking on the captaincy decision, journalist Graeme Bailey told TBR Football: “Obviously, since it was made aware to Romero that he was not leaving, he has been exemplary in the way he has gone about things; he was the leader of that team anyway. So, from what I am told within Spurs, it was pretty much a no-brainer.”

Bailey further explained the situation surrounding Romero’s contract: “There have been talks with Thomas Frank, and he is very, very happy with what he has come across.

“Will this help persuade him to sign a new contract? It will not hurt. That is what the club really want. They want him to sign this new deal.

“It will see him become the highest-paid player at the club, if things start well this season, I do not think that will be a million miles away.”

Tottenham contract focus could extend beyond Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero is not the only player Tottenham are eager to secure for the long term, as midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is also believed to be in discussions over an extension.

The departure of Heung-min Son to MLS side LAFC this summer has eased pressure on the wage structure, giving Spurs more flexibility to reward their key players.

With Son gone, James Maddison is currently the highest earner at Tottenham on around £170,000 per week, a figure that appears modest when compared to the contracts handed out at other members of the Premier League’s traditional top six.
