Cristian Romero scored a bicycle kick to earn Spurs a point in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle on Tuesday night.

Tottenham hero Cristian Romero has credited Argentina team-mate Lionel Messi with helping him score a dramatic leveller against Newcastle United.

Spurs were trailing the game at St James’ Park 2-1 in stoppage time. Romero had drawn them level with a header earlier in the second half after Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring.

Newcastle retook the lead with four minutes left to play as Anthony Gordon scored a controversial penalty.

With time running down, Romero stepped up again to earn his team a point with a spectacular overhead kick. The goal came in the fifth minute of added time.

The goal prevented Spurs from falling to a fourth straight defeat in all competitions. The result does, however, leave them five games in all competitions, and four in the Premier League without victory.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Romero said: "It's very important. In the last three or four games, the team knows it's not been good enough.

"Today, the mentality to play like this altogether it's a difficult time, but especially in this game, I love the mentality.”

The goal is one that is likely to be replayed over and over again. But Romero is not taking all of the credit, pointing towards Barcelona and Argentina legend Messi.

"I train every day with Leo Messi in the national team and I watch him,” he said. ”It's a beautiful goal."

Following the game, Spurs boss Thomas Frank was full of praise for his captain, highlighting the impact he has at both ends of the pitch.

“The perfect bicycle kick, hit the shin, aiming for the bottom corner,” he said. “I think let's start praising Cuti, I think he deserved that for all of the top performance, defending, on the ball, coolness, calmness, duels.

“And then getting up there and scoring two goals. I think the bicycle kick will most likely get a little bit more praise, but I think the header is more exceptional, the way he does that is better than many strikers.”

The result leaves Spurs in 11th place in the Premier League table ahead of Wednesday night’s fixtures. They have secured 19 points from their opening 14 games of the campaign.

Frank’s side are next back in action on Saturday when they host Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (3pm kick-off).
