An interesting update has emerged regarding Atletico Madrid’s stance on pursuing a deal for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero this summer.
Romero is reportedly being eyed by several clubs around Europe ahead of the summer as Spurs stand on the brink of relegation to the Championship.
It has even been suggested by Marca that the Spurs captain’s contract has a release clause that can be activated by Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona this summer.
The outlet explained that it was Romero who put the clause in place after Atletico’s failed move last summer, with the La Liga club expected to prioritise a deal for the centre-back again this summer.
However, Fabrizio Romano says there is no clause and Romero instead made a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ with Daniel Levy, who has since departed Spurs.

However, Sky Sports have now indicated in their live transfer blog that Atletico may not be certain to reignite their interest in Romero.
The outlet confirms that the Colchoneros have held long-term interest in the 27-year-old and even held talks over a deal last summer, before the defender eventually signed a new contract at N17.
The report says that there are doubts again about Romero’s future at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of this summer, but there may be some indecision at Atletico regarding the former Juventus man.
This is because sources in Spain suggest that not everyone involved in making decisions at Atletico is sold on the World Cup winner.

Not everyone at the Metropolitano Stadium may be an admirer of the Tottenham man, but the most important figure at the La Liga club certainly is.
Ahead of his side’s Champions League clash in North London last week, Diego Simeone publicly expressed his admiration for Romero’s qualities as a player and his character.
Those words may be concerning for Spurs fans, particularly amidst reports of a release clause in the defender’s contract.
