Cristian Romero sounds warning to his Tottenham teammates despite Villarreal win

2 hours ago 1

Cristian Romero has reacted after Tottenham Hotspur defeated Villarreal in the Champions League, and he has stated clearly what needs to happen next.

Cristian Romero is enjoying his role as Tottenham Hotspur captain, particularly in Europe. The Argentine defender wore the captain’s armband in the Europa League final, and he led his side to victory once again, against Villarreal.

Spurs collecting all three points is the most important takeaway from Tuesday’s fixture, but there is room for improvement. A quick start was followed by slow passing and a lack of innovation, meaning there was just one goal separating the teams.

Romero will still be encouraged because he did his job on the night. Tottenham remained strong at the back and kept a fourth clean sheet in all competitions this season.

Cristian Romero calls on Tottenham to improve

Romero has delivered a largely positive message after Spurs conquered Villarreal. The central defender praised his team for their strong start and gave a special mention to the supporters.

However, Romero has warned his teammates not to show complacency or get too excited about starting their Champions League campaign with a victory.

He posted on his X account: “Great night for all of us, back competing where we love [in the]

Champions League. Strong start, but this is a long [road] and we have to keep working and improving.

“Big thanks to all the fans for the incredible support today. Always together”

Spurs must post more of an attacking threat

The problem with Tottenham against Villarreal was breaking down the opposition. Even after the Spanish team went behind, they seemed happy to let Spurs have possession and stroll around with the ball.

However, Villarreal stayed in the game and looked to take advantage later on when Tottenham’s momentum had died down. It is important that Spurs keep up the intensity in future matches and get their most creative players in positions where they can have an impact on the game. Moving Xavi Simons into midfield would be a good start.
