Curtis Jones makes honest Liverpool admission after Galatasaray defeat - 'Must be mad'

6 hours ago 34

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones says it is "normal" to lose games, but the true test of where the Reds are at this season will come in the reaction to the defeats against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray.

Arne Slot's men put in a dismal performance at Selhurst Park at the weekend, particularly in the first half. That was followed up by a limited showing in the Champions League, in which Liverpool never really looked like scoring.

But Jones says there is no reason for concern at this stage of the season. Liverpool is still top of the Premier League table and still has six more matches left in the group phase in Europe, so it should have no problems progressing.

"I say it all the time, you must be mad if you think you can win every game," Jones told the Reds' official website.

"Of course you would like to, but the reality is the teams we play are world-class teams and it's normal if you lose games it's just how you bounce back.

"We've got a huge game in three days, so we have to go again. The lads have to stay calm, it's fine, it's part of it. It's not fine that we lose but I think it's fine in the way that we just have to stay calm. It will all change, of course it will."

Florian Wirtz struggled to make an impact again while Jeremie Frimpong, playing in place of Mohamed Salah, offered little on the right wing. Hugo Ekitike started well but his influence faded.

"It's always hard when you lose games, of course it is, but I thought the lads played well, there were positives from the whole of the game," Jones said.

"In the second half they played in a low block and they are a physical team as well. The fans were behind them for the whole night and it was a hard game but we'll go again.

"I got kicked everywhere but again, I say it all the time, this is the Champions League and it is always going to be a hard game. It's their biggest game of the year I'd say and I think it showed with the fans and how the players played as well.

"If you look at their first game, they get beat (5-1 by Frankfurt) and if you look at it tonight, it didn't even look like we could have scored. That is just how the game went.

"We played out loads, it was positive at times when they came and pressed, me, Ryan (Gravenberch) and Flo (Florian Wirtz) played through and went but we'd like more shots and obviously more goals."

Liverpool.com says: Jones is right to say that the Reds shouldn't be panicking, but a win at Chelsea would go a long way to convincing the doubters. So far this season, it has looked like results like the ones picked up this week were in the post, and that has proven to be the case.
