Daniel Levy could come in clutch for Tottenham with relegation wage clause

Daniel Levy had one policy in place to protect Tottenham Hotspur’s finances if the club were relegated from the Premier League.

Spurs find themselves just four points off the relegation spot at the moment, with just 10 league games to go.

Tottenham have reportedly already lost a major sponsor due to their underperformance in the Premier League this season, and things could get much worse.

According to some reports, Spurs could lose a whopping £250m in revenue if they were to go down for the first time in nearly half a century.

Tottenham players’ contract contains a relegation clause

However, Spurs do have one provision to help them cut costs in the event of relegation to the Championship.

This is according to The Athletic, which says that the Tottenham players face wage cuts if they fail to preserve the club’s Premier League status.

The report reveals that most members of the first-team squad are on deals which include a mandatory salary reduction in case the club drop down a division, and many of them would see their earnings slashed by half.

The provision was included in all contracts by former chairman Daniel Levy, who wanted to ensure that the club was protected in case of a catastrophe.

It is unclear if the two January signings, Conor Gallagher and Souza, have such clauses in their contracts.

A mass exodus expected from Spurs if they are relegated

Reports indicate that relegation could trigger a mass exodus from Spurs this summer, with many of the club’s stars unlikely to be open to playing in the Championship.

That update, which came from TEAMtalk, claimed that Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Destiny Udogie, Dejan Kulusevski, Xavi Simons and others could all seek exits if Tottenham go down.

Additionally, it was claimed that Spurs will emerge as the go-to place to shop for top talent for a host of top-flight clubs in the summer if they fail to stay up.
