Danny Welbeck says Brighton had to play well to come away with the three points against Liverpool at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, with Arne Slot's men falling to another defeat.

The former Manchester United forward netted a brace on the south coast, with the first coming after a mistake from Giorgi Mamardashvili and Ibrahima Konate. Liverpool fell behind in the second half and never really looked like creating enough chances across the course of the game.

"It was a great day," Welbeck told TNT Sports. "A really great performance from the lads because they have some great players with good qualities so you have to be switched on at all times, and really pleased to get the three points today.

"We work on it throughout the week, and there are a lot of different patterns that we have. It’s nice when it works on a match day."

There was a long delay while the second goal was checked, with the VAR eventually ruling that Welbeck was onside.

"It’s so annoying, honestly," Welbeck said. "I think I have a bit of PTSD because when we played against Fulham, and I scored, and celebrated wildly.

"I think I was offside by like an elbow or something, which was a little bit mad but yeah it’s difficult because you want to celebrate but you don’t know if you’re offside so you have to wait for the VAR. It takes a lot of time, and it takes the joy out of it."

Liverpool defender Jeremie Frimpong struggled, with Yankuba Minteh, who played for Arne Slot at Feyenoord, causing all kinds of problems down the left.

“Mintah was incredible," Welbeck said. "He was threatening throughout the whole game, and once he’s playing like that and he’s putting that amount of energy, passion and hardwork, he’s going to be really dangerous for any team he comes up against."

And the former Liverpool midfielder James Milner impressed as well, setting the tone in the center of the field. He was physically dominant against players several years his junior.

"Who Benjamin Button? Yeah, James Milner is incredible," Welbeck added. "So for me, I’m thirty-five and he’s fourty, and he is pushing every single day.

"It’s not normal to see it. You only see it in match day but if you see what he is doing throughout the week, and the stuff that he is not just doing on the pitch, but off it, he is pushing the standards for everyone every single day.

"I really hope that this isn’t his last season because he has plenty more left in the tank as you can see in his performances over the last few weeks."
