Darwin Nunez faces worrying Saudi development weeks after $62M Liverpool transfer

3 weeks ago 8

Darwin Nunez's career in the Saudi Pro League could already be in jeopardy, despite a promising start with Al-Hilal.

The ex-Liverpool forward, who departed the club last month for a transfer fee just north of $62 million, scored in three successive pre-season matches for Simone Inzaghi's side. Although he did find the net in Al-Hilal's 2-0 triumph over Al-Riyadh, it was disallowed by video assistant refereeing – but the Uruguayan appears to be acclimatising well so far.

However, this could all potentially come crashing down for the 26-year-old due to a new strategy implemented by the Saudi government.

Authorities are looking to cut back on spending in soccer and put the nation's four most significant clubs on the market: Al-Nassr, Al Hilal, Al Ittihad, and Al Ahli.

According to Brazilian news outlet O Globo, the government is aiming to lessen soccer clubs' reliance on public funds and entice other investors to manage these teams instead. Currently, 75% of the capital is owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), with the remaining portion controlled by the Ministry of Sport.

This decision could complicate Nunez's contract in Saudi Arabia, just weeks after he inked a deal with his new club until 2028. Major Saudi clubs, such as Al-Hilal, might plan to curtail their spending in anticipation of this government decision taking effect, in order to maintain their team's longevity in the league.

This creates an element of risk for fresh arrivals, like Nunez, as they lack the same influence within the squad compared to established stars who have been at the club for extended periods.

Nunez's Liverpool journey concluded this summer, closing what many would consider a disappointing chapter at Anfield – particularly given his hefty price tag. The forward made the switch from Benfica to Merseyside in a potentially club-record $115M deal back in 2022.

Nunez' start to life in England was tough, as many criticized the player for missing chances during his first few months leading the line at Anfield. He managed to score just 20 times in the Premier League during his opening two seasons before being gradually excluded from the starting XI under current manager Arne Slot.

Overall, the Uruguayan striker scored 40 goals and assisted 26 times in 143 appearances for the Merseyside club, and won a host of honours with the club. Nunez helped secure the Premier League title, Carabao Cup, and Community Shield prior to his Saudi move and expressed how the club will remain dear to him throughout his career.

Writing his farewell message on social media, the striker said: "Thank you, Liverpool. Three years on, it's time to say goodbye. I'll take with me countless memories that will live with me forever.

"I leave with a full heart – thanks to the love of a crowd that never let me down and always had my back – through the highs and through the lows. Liverpool will always be part of who I am. I'll miss you more than words can say.

"To all the staff and my team-mates, thank you, and all the very best for the future. YNWA."
