Darwin Nunez has issued a defiant message as he comes under pressure from fellow Liverpool favorite Sadio Mane in the race for the Saudi Pro League title.

Both of the former Reds are in search of glory this season in the Middle East, with Nunez aiming to claim back-to-back titles after helping Liverpool to the Premier League crown last year.

The Uruguay international has scored seven goals and added five assists in 22 appearances across all competitions since making the move from Anfield last summer, although there was nothing he could do to prevent his Al-Hilal side from having its lead at the top of the table cut once again.

A goalless draw against Al-Ahli on Monday - Al-Hilal’s third straight draw in the league - means Nunez’s side now sits just a point above Mane’s Al-Nassr.

Despite the unrest amid reports that Cristiano Ronaldo has gone on strike, Mane was on hand to score the winner for Al-Nassr against Al-Riyadh, which leaves his side breathing down the neck of Al-Hilal.

It’s a tight race for the Saudi Pro League title, with Al-Ahli also in the mix, sitting just three points off the pace with 15 games still to go in the season.

Despite his side coming under pressure, having held a seven-point lead at the top of the table just a few games ago, Nunez insists they’re not feeling the heat.

“We remain focused and determined in the pursuit of the title. Vamos, @Alhilal_FC,” he posted on X on Tuesday.

Nunez brought his time at Liverpool to an end last summer, having spent three seasons at Anfield after making the £85 million ($114 million) move from Benfica.

Despite the hefty price tag, he struggled to settle in, and although he remained a favorite with many supporters, he also proved to be a frustrating figure, with his wastefulness in front of goal often raising the ire of fans.

He made 143 appearances for the Reds, scoring 40 goals in the process, but found himself out favor under Arne Slot before securing his exit last year.

“Three years on, it’s time to say goodbye. I’ll take with me countless memories that will live with me forever,” Nunez said upon his departure.

“I leave with a full heart, thanks to the love of a crowd that never let me down and always had my back - through the highs and through the lows.

“Liverpool will always be part of who I am. I’ll miss you more than words can say.”
