Everton have been linked with a loan move for Manchester City winger Jack Grealish but their struggles in the transfer market so far highlight the main issue facing City this summer.
Grealish has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Etihad Stadium - four years on from his British record £100million move from Aston Villa.
In that time, Grealish has helped City win a treble and three Premier League titles, but he has fallen out of favour under Pep Guardiola this summer.
Savinho, Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Rayan Cherki, Bernardo Silva, Omar Marmoush and Oscar Bobb are all above the England international in the current pecking order and it has been decided he is available for transfer this summer.
Guardiola is desperate to trim his squad but so far there has been no concrete interest in the 29-year-old.
Everton's loan interest has been mooted in recent days but their manager David Moyes has lamented his side's struggles in the transfer window and hinted they may have to wait until later in the window to make more signings.
"The truth is we're not getting a lot of the deals over the line at the moment, that's a fact," he told reporters during Everton's tour of the United States.
"We're desperate to get things moving on because we know time's running out.
"The one thing I'll do is I'll tell the fans straight, and I'm telling it straight at the moment, we're having a bit of a struggle getting ones in quickly."
With interest elsewhere on Grealish thin on the ground, City may have to wait for Everton to make their move. Ideally, they would want a permanent sale but a loan deal looks more likely.
Everton are not the only club struggling to make a dent in the transfer market this summer.
Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have made just one senior signing each while Aston Villa are yet to make an imprint on the window.
Moyes' comments are indicative of a window where we may see more movement later on in the summer.
With City looking to offload as many as 10 players still this summer, Guardiola may have to be patient to get his wish of trimming his squad.
