Tottenham are set to begin the new season without two of their most important creative players, as injuries to Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison continue to cast a shadow over preparations.
Thomas Frank’s options at number ten took a major hit earlier on August 7, after it was revealed that James Maddison had torn his ACL.
The midfielder, who was only just recovering from an MCL injury picked up in May, reinjured the same knee in a pre-season clash against Newcastle United, with the setback now exacerbated to an ACL tear, which requires surgery.
The depth at number ten is further reduced, as Dejan Kulusevski is also sidelined after injuring his patella at the back end of last season.
Dejan Kulusevski set to miss the first month of Tottenham season through injury
The Mirror are now reporting that Dejan Kulusevski is set to miss the first month of the upcoming season, which should mean that the versatile winger could return in September.
The expectation was always that a comeback was not imminent for the 25-year-old, with a return during Spring considered the likeliest scenario, which makes this update a major boost for Tottenham.
The Swede has been working his way to full fitness this summer, with Kulusevski even sharing an encouraging update with Tottenham fans, as he posted himself kicking a ball for the first time since May.
Spurs transfer search intensifies after Maddison and Kulusevski injuries
Spurs’ pursuit of an attacking midfielder has now gone into overdrive following the injury setback of James Maddison.
Several players remain on the radar of Tottenham as potential number tens, including Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche, who is said to be monitored, but it remains unclear if he is currently considered an active target.
Bilal El Khannouss is another name Tottenham have been linked with, alongside James McAtee and Jack Grealish. With time running out, Tottenham now need to act swiftly to address the glaring gap in their squad.
