Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has sent a classy message to his former club following their historic FIFA Club World Cup victory over Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend.

Enzo Maresca’s side stunned the footballing world on Sunday, not only beating but comprehensively dismantling Luis Enrique’s PSG at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The French side had eliminated Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the FIFA competition and are the reigning European champions.

However, they were no match for Chelsea, as goals from Cole Palmer and summer signing Joao Pedro saw the Blues cruise to victory, with no reply from their opponents. Chelsea became the inaugural winners of the revamped Club World Cup, which was staged in the United States throughout June and July.

There has been plenty of reaction to the triumph on social media, including from club legend Drogba, who spent eight years at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2012. During his time at the club, the striker made over 380 appearances in all competitions and scored 164 goals.

In an Instagram message posted on Monday, Drogba praised the current Chelsea side for the style in which they secured the trophy. “A lot to be proud of,” he wrote.

“World Club Champions, with style please. Congratulations to the boys, the manager and staff.” He followed this with hashtags including #historymakers and #wevewonitall.

Chelsea’s squad will now head off for a well-deserved break, having endured an unprecedented 53-week season, featuring 64 matches. Their pre-season campaign in August will include a mini-tournament at Stamford Bridge, with fixtures against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan.

There will be fewer than two weeks between the players’ return to training and their opening Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace on August 17.
