Diogo Jota's family and Liverpool players pay respects at Anfield memorial

2 weeks ago 118

The family of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva were joined by the Liverpool squad and senior staff at Anfield earlier today as they gathered at the poignant memorial site that has formed outside the stadium.

Jota, 28, and Silva, 25, were tragically lost in a car crash last Thursday. Just over a week on, fans have laid shirts, scarves and tributes on the grass outside Anfield's Main Stand.

Jota's wife, Rute, was in attendance in L4. The pair had married less than two weeks before the Liverpool striker was involved in the accident and they had three young children together.

Players including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were among the group. So too were new signings Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.

Liverpool has returned for pre-season training this week and will play its first friendly of the summer on Sunday. Before that game, tributes to Jota and Silva will be made at Preston North End's Deepdale ground.

You'll Never Walk Alone will be sung before kick-off, and Preston will lay a wreath alongside the away supporters. A minute's silence will be observed, and both sets of players will wear black armbands.

There is also a commemorative edition of the matchday programme that features written tributes. That will be distributed for free to those who are in attendance and have a match ticket.
