Djed Spence has capped off his fine start to the season with Tottenham by celebrating a career-first achievement this week.
Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed nothing short of a flawless beginning to life under their new manager, Thomas Frank, in the Premier League.
It has been two wins from two for the Lilywhites so far, with five goals scored and two clean sheets, one of which came against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in a statement performance last gameweek.
At the heart of this strong early run has been Djed Spence, who has slotted in at left-back with composure and confidence in the absence of Destiny Udogie, as the Italian continues his recovery from injury.
Tottenham defender Djed Spence earns first England call-up
Spence’s hard work was recognised by Tottenham earlier in the summer, with the club handing the 25-year-old a new long-term contract that will keep him in north London until 2029.
Now, further good news has followed for the full-back, who has earned his first senior England call-up after a string of standout displays that have extended beyond just the opening two matches of this campaign.
He is the only Tottenham player included in the latest England squad, with striker Dominic Solanke missing out after limited minutes in recent weeks due to an injury setback.
Spence chasing World Cup dream with England
With the 2026 World Cup looming, this is a significant step forward for Spence, who will be eager to stake his claim for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the tournament.
Many pundits had tipped Spence for an England call-up last season, yet the full-back has had to remain patient before finally receiving the recognition his consistency deserved.
Speaking back in March about the prospect of making his international debut, Spence revealed his mindset on the matter, telling reporters: “Who does not want to play for their country?
“That is something I am looking forward to. If I get called up, happy days, if I do not, I will just keep working hard.
“I have not heard from anyone. I am just focusing on right now, I just want to keep playing well and help the team win games.”
