Dominik Szoboszlai vindicates Steven Gerrard comparisons with Liverpool actions

2 hours ago 31

Dominik Szoboszlai continues to enhance his reputation as the next Steven Gerrard for Liverpool - and it’s not just his performances on the pitch that are earning him that reputation.

Despite it being a disappointing season for the Reds overall, for Szoboszlai, it has been a superb individual campaign.

The Hungarian is the club’s second-top scorer this season with 12 goals in all competitions, behind only Hugo Ekitike in the standings. He also eight assists to his name, trailing only Mohamed Salah on 10, with both stats made even more impressive by the fact he has found himself playing in multiple positions, including right-back.

Szoboszlai has been one of the few bright sparks this season for Liverpool, and his performances have led some pundits to draw comparisons with Gerrard - who is considered by some to be the club’s greatest ever player.

Even Gerrard himself has tipped Szoboszlai to become a future captain of the club, and his off-field actions look to be lining him up nicely with the role.

Young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi has explained how Szoboszlai has shown more of those Gerrard-like qualities in helping him to settle in on Merseyside. The 21-year-old followed in the footsteps of his fellow countryman and Milos Kerkez when he signed for Liverpool last summer from Puskas Akademia.

Armin Pecsi has credited Dominik Szoboszlai with helping him to settle in at Liverpool

"They helped me a lot, especially Dom because he's here for a longer time. He helped me a lot," Pecsi told Liverpool’s official website.

"When I want to ask him something or get help, he always helps me. I think we get along good.

“It was good that sometimes I could speak to someone Hungarian or if I didn't understand someone or ask about something or how things work here, it was easier to explain in Hungarian and he was here.

"Of course when it comes to football and we speak about football, in this part he can also help me a lot. When I see the guys or him in training, it's a big inspiration in the big level they show every day."

Although the Gerrard comparisons keep coming, Szoboszlai has actually tried to play down the tag recently.

"I'm not playing a Steven Gerrard season, although he was a legend for the club,” Szoboszlai told TNT Sports in February. “I just try to do my own story and I try to do my best every game. Hopefully we can go on until the end.

"I don't score every time, but the last couple of times, it's been fine! I just want to keep going and score as many as I can."
