Dowman hint, Saliba and Martinelli moment - Three things spotted in Arsenal training

3 hours ago 24

Mikel Arteta has put his Arsenal players through their paces for the last time ahead of the club's Carabao Cup third round clash against Port Vale.

The Gunners make the trip to the League One side on Wednesday hoping to go all the way in a competition they reached the semi-finals in last time out. After playing Manchester City on Sunday, Arteta is expected to ring the changes and give some valuable minutes to some of his fringe stars.

The likes of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Ben White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and Gabriel Martinelli are in contention to start as they bid to show Arteta they should be in the starting XI on a more regular basis. Ahead of the clash at Vale Park, the Arsenal squad trained as normal at London Colney on Tuesday.

Plenty happened in the session as the Gunners squad took part in a number of drills to get themselves ready. Below is what football.london spotted in images released of the session by the club.

Max Dowman involved

As has been the case since pre-season, Max Dowman was involved in Tuesday's session. The 15-year-old was not named in the squad to face Man City at the weekend, though, and instead featured for the Arsenal U21s against Wolves U21s on Saturday, a game in which he scored in.

Dowman has a real chance of starting against Port Vale in midweek and the teenager was pictured a number of times in the training images. At one stage he was pictured warming up behind Eberechi Eze, while another snap shows the teen smiling in the background as Mikel Merino battles with Christhian Mosquera.

Injury news

A number of players are currently sidelined with injury and there was no good injury news, if the training images are to go by. Noni Madueke was forced off with a knee injury against City on Sunday, while Piero Hincapie and Martin Odegaard were not included in the matchday squad at all at the weekend.

Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are more long-term absentees and there was no sign of any of the five players in the images released. That most likely means they will not be involved against Port Vale, although Odegaard and Hincapie may return for Newcastle on Sunday.

Saliba and Martinelli moment

As you would expect, spirits are high in the Arsenal camp at the minute. The Gunners are second in the Premier League, have won their only Champions League match and are now preparing for a run in the Carabao Cup.

The mood was certainly jovial between William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli, too, as the pair were seen sharing a joke midway through the session. Fresh off the back of scoring the equaliser against Pep Guardiola's side, Martinelli appeared to be the instigator of the moment and both will be hoping for more happy moments on Wednesday.
