Arne Slot says that Mohamed Salah deserves a big send off by Liverpool fans at the final game at Anfield in May.

Salah announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season in an emotional video, drawing the curtain on one of the most successful spells in the club’s modern history. The forward will depart Anfield with 255 goals in 435 appearances and nine major honours.

While those numbers underline his influence, they only partially capture Salah’s impact since his 2017 arrival from AS Roma. Widely regarded as one of the defining players of the Premier League era, he is set to leave Liverpool firmly established as a club legend. It comes as Slot paid tribute to Salah in his first interview since the news broke.

Salah is expected to make his final appearance at Anfield for Liverpool on the last day of the Premier League season, when Brentford travels to Merseyside on May 24. It is already shaping up to be an emotional and celebratory occasion as the 33-year-old prepares to bid farewell to supporters.

Slot has stressed that fans still have a vital role to play in the crucial weeks ahead. The Reds face a pivotal stretch in their campaign, beginning with a trip to Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday. A Champions League quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain also looms, alongside key Premier League fixtures against Fulham and Everton.

"Mo definitely deserves that the fans give him a great farewell," he said. "If they want to do it game after game after game, I'm completely fine with that, because it usually helps players if they get the help from the fans, but it would be perfect if it's not only about Mo.

"There's every right that it should be about Mo for everything that he does for this club, but we are playing for something special and I think every player needs the support of our fans in the upcoming period.

"Mo will 100 per cent sure get it – and until now I've always felt that all of our players have felt that support when they were playing. We need this because [we have] challenging games."

The Dutchman added: "If there were ever two fixtures that showed how important our fans were, it is Galatasaray, because we'd lost twice against them away from home but the moment we played at home with our fans supporting us in the way they did that game [really helped]. How our players played probably helped as well, but the support was incredible.

"I think our players have to play that incredible but our fans have to be as incredible as they were against Galatasaray at home throughout the rest of the season."

Slot also says he hopes the forward can further enhance his legacy in the weeks and months ahead, crediting his contributions in recent seasons as a major factor behind the club’s sustained success.
