Eddie Howe has admitted he is unsure whether Bruno Guimaraes will be fit to face Liverpool this weekend.

The Newcastle captain sustained an injury in last week’s Champions League victory over PSV Eindhoven and has missed the Magpies’ last two matches. He was named as a substitute at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, with Howe opting against risking the 28-year-old.

Guimaraes remains a doubt ahead of this weekend’s trip to Anfield despite returning to training on Thursday. “It's slightly unknown at the moment,” Howe revealed. “He did really well to be with us in Paris - that was down to the fact he was desperate to support the players.

“He did very, very light training. He trained with us yesterday, but that was more of a test, so we'll see how he is today. This will be where we decide [for tomorrow].”

Guimaraes is not the only Brazilian midfielder who sustained an injury last week. Joelinton was replaced in the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa last Sunday and Howe confirmed earlier this week he was set to miss the Liverpool clash.

“He flew on to Barcelona after the [PSG] game to get an injection in his groin,” the former Bournemouth boss added on Friday.

“It was good news. The specialist feels he only needs one injection and that means his return could be quite quick and we're looking at weeks, not months. Unsure of the exact date yet, but it's positive news.”

Newcastle will also be without Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth and Tino Livramento, with Howe revealing in his press conference that the latter should be back in early March.

The Magpies currently trail Liverpool by three points in the Premier League table and both Champions League sides face a battle to qualify for next season’s competition.

Arne Slot admitted in his press conference that the Reds cannot afford many more mistakes, and it has amplified the importance of Saturday’s fixture.

“For us, it's about making sure we perform in every game, regardless of where we play,” said Howe.

“It's a great fixture. Historically, it's been a great fixture. We want to try and do that justice by being the best we can.”

As for Liverpool, it will be without Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni and Alexander Isak this weekend, but Ibrahima Konate and Curtis Jones are set to return after missing the midweek Champions League win over Qarabag.
