Manchester City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer after long-term No.1 Ederson left to sign for Fenerbahce.
Ederson has revealed he left Manchester City this summer because he needed a new challenge and that he had tried to get out of the Etihad even earlier because he was unhappy.
The Brazilian brought the curtain down on eight years as City's No.1 with a £12million move to Fenerbahce in the summer, with the Blues spending £26million on Gianluigi Donnarumma as a replacement.
There was plenty of conjecture during the transfer window as to whether Ederson had left because City took advantage of Donnarumma being told he could leave Paris Saintt-Germain, or if Ederson's desire to move on opened the door to the Italian's arrival.
Ederson, 32, has now made it clear that he instigated his plan to leave City after 372 games for the club and attributed his patchy form last season to his failure to move on a year earlier.
"In a previous season I had already tried to leave, but it didn't work out," he said. "I think that influenced my performance a bit during the season. I had five injuries and wasn't at my highest possible level.
"It was a decision I had already made with my family to talk to the club about leaving if we agreed. I needed this change. There's no point in being at a giant, winning club if you're not happy. That would continue to affect me in the same way."
Ederson's ability with the ball at his feet changed the nature of goalkeeping in the Premier League, but he had become unsettled at the Etihad in recent seasons. He was occasionally usurped by Stefan Ortega last season.
City moved to bring James Trafford back to the club for £27million in July with the expectation that the English goalkeeper would battle Ederson for the No.1 jersey, only for the Brazil international to make it clear he wanted out.
Donnarumma's deadline day arrival has seen the 26-year-old installed as No.1 and already put a question mark next to the future of Trafford.
"All cycles come to an end, players come and go, but the club always remains," said Ederson. "I had eight wonderful years wearing the City shirt and won 18 titles, but I needed this change and a change of scenery.
"When Fenerbahce came along, I embraced it. I still have the same mentality, I continue doing my off-field work, just like I did at City with my physical trainer. I still have the winning mentality that I had at City and Benfica, and I want to win at Fenerbahce too."
