Enzo Fernandez Chelsea transfer twist as Premier League rival 'considering' star

Speculation surrounding Enzo Fernandez's future continues to heat up ahead of the summer transfer window

Manchester City are reportedly considering a move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, despite his turbulent season at Stamford Bridge.

The Argentine midfielder has had a challenging campaign with the West London club. The 25-year-old has impressed in front of goal, netting 12 times across all competitions. However, he was recently handed an internal suspension following comments he made regarding a potential switch to Real Madrid.

Having now served that ban, the former Benfica ace has been linked with a move to one of Chelsea's Premier League rivals. According to The Athletic, Man City are weighing up a bid as they look to strengthen their midfield following Bernardo Silva's departure.

City's interest is understood to be at an early stage, with Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson also on their radar at the Etihad Stadium. Fernandez made the move to Chelsea in a £106million deal from Benfica and has since gone on to rack up 163 appearances for the West London outfit.

Nevertheless, he has faced considerable criticism in recent weeks, with his display against Brighton drawing sharp words from Tim Sherwood. He said: "He wanted to make a show, this is not someone who I wanted to see with an armband on.

"He wants to leave the club. He stuck his chest out, he stood there, he made a stand, mate, make a stand when the game is on, do something about it, lead your players, you're an individual who plays for himself.

"He's probably there talking to the coaching staff trying to blame everyone else around him. That ain't what leaders do, they galvanise their team-mates, they make sure they're organised, he has to know when he's on that pitch what Liam Rosenior wants, and he has to try and implement it on the pitch for his manager."

Rosenior was dismissed following that match, with the former Strasbourg manager's tenure at Chelsea lasting merely four months. Fernandez is tied to Chelsea until 2032, though his representative Javier Pastore has recently disclosed that discussions are taking place over an extension at Stamford Bridge.

He also stated that if no agreement is reached following the World Cup, then he may be compelled to explore other options. Real Madrid are reportedly interested, but it's unclear whether the Spanish giants would make a move this summer.
