Erling Haaland sends ex-Man City star classy message as announcement made

Scott Carson announced his retirement from professional football on Thursday, with a host of his former Manchester City team-mates, including Erling Haaland, sending him their well-wishes

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Scott Carson has received a heartwarming message from Erling Haaland after announcing his retirement. Carson, 40, left City this past summer upon the expiry of his contract.

The goalkeeper spent six years at the Etihad and made just two appearances. But Carson was part of a squad that won 11 trophies, including City's famous treble victory in 2023.

Pep Guardiola valued Carson's wealth of experience and his relationship with his team-mates, especially the goalkeeping department. The Cumbrian played for a total of 10 clubs and won four England caps during a career that spanned 21 years.

On Thursday, Carson took to social media to confirm his retirement. "After an incredible journey between the posts, it's time to hang up the gloves," he wrote on Instagram.

"Football has given me everything - memories, friendships, and moments I'll never forget. Thank you to every teammate, coach, fan, and club that's been part of my ride. It's been an honour."

Ex-City team-mates flooded the replies section with kind messages, with Haaland among them. "Miss you pal all the best," the striker commented.

Haaland had previously said when Carson left the Etihad: "The kind of teammate every squad needs. All the best in the new chapter."

Former City right-back Kyle Walker commented after Carson's retirement: "What a legend mate enjoy retirement mate was a pleasure for all them years and some good memories along the way."

Jack Grealish, who's currently on loan at Everton, added: "The CAT. Incredible career."

Other former City players, including Ederson and Fernandinho, used goat emojis to express their affection for the 40-year-old. Guardiola will have the chance to pay tribute on Friday when he speaks to the media ahead of City's trip to Aston Villa.

In the past, the City manager has spoken highly of Carson. In March 2022, following his first Champions League appearance for City after coming on as a substitute for Ederson, Guardiola hailed: "We are delighted. He is very important to us behind the scenes.

"His chemistry with Ederson and Zack Steffen is fundamental in the locker room. People listen when he speaks. He made the biggest save (of the game)."

Carson has a 19-year-old son, Hayden, who's part of Wolves' academy. The defender is currently on loan at Chester in the National League North.
