Estevao Willian will be hoping to return to Enzo Maresca's starting lineup when Chelsea lock horns with Everton at Stamford Bridge this weekend

Estevao Willian showed his true colours during Chelsea's disappointing 2-1 defeat to Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League. The 18-year-old winger was an unused substitute at the New Balance Arena on Tuesday night, watching on from the sidelines as the Blues squandered their lead.

Joao Pedro fired Chelsea ahead inside the opening half-hour, sliding the ball beneath Marco Carnesecchi at the near post. The west Londoners failed to capitalise on a couple of gilt-edged opportunities before La Dea pulled back an equaliser.

Then, in the final minutes, Charles De Ketelaere put Atalanta in the lead, beating Robert Sanchez with a deflected strike. Chelsea fell out of the top eight and extended their winless streak across all competitions to four games.

Estevao was desperate to make an impact in Bergamo, but he was left on the bench. The Brazil international was sent out to warm up during the second half, and he was pitchside when Gianluca Scamacca levelled proceedings.

A fan in the stands recorded Estevao's reaction to the goal and uploaded it to X, formerly known as X. The teenage sensation was heartbroken when the Serie A outfit equalised, grabbing his shirt and muttering a few words to himself before kicking a training cone in frustration.

He then continued his warm-up exercise with Jorrel Hato, Andrey Santos, Marc Guiu, and Facundo Buonanotte. Estevao's hunger to play, passion for the game and winning mentality shone through during a difficult moment.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Maresca explained why the Brazilian wasn't brought on. The Chelsea boss said: "The idea, the change of Tosin [Adarabioyo], is because Wes [Fofana], we needed to change him, so that was a bit enforced.

"With one more change, probably there was more chance for Estevao to go inside or for Andrey [Santos] to go inside. But then with that change, it changed a little bit the plan of the game."

On the challenges of rotating the starting lineup, Maresca said: "I think tonight, first XI, we had inside the pitch eight, nine players that they play against Tottenham, they play against Barcelona, they play against Wolves, Arsenal.

"I mean, we had eight, nine players that they are the ones that they are playing every time, these kind of games. So if you see the five changes that we did compared to Bournemouth, it's different.

"But if you see that inside the pitch, we had eight, nine players that they are the same, Barcelona, Arsenal, Tottenham, Wolves, you know, these kind of games. But the ones that they play tonight are the ones that they are playing almost all the games."

On the results, Maresca said: "I think after the goal we conceded, we lost a little bit of control of the game. In the first half, we scored the goal, we conceded something, but also we created some chances.

"In the second half, I think we had two good chances to score the second one. And then again, after we conceded the 1-1 [goal], we lost a little bit of control of the game, and then we conceded the second one.

"I think both goals, we can avoid both of them, they're quite easy goals."
